Getting There

Most visitors arrive at Bora Bora by air from Tahiti, Moorea, or other major islands. Direct flight from Tahiti or Moorea to Bora Bora takes about 50 minutes.

Bora Bora Airport, also known as Motu Mute Airport (BOB), is often considered one of the most beautiful airports in the world. Situated on a small motu (islet), it is surrounded by the turquoise lagoon, with panoramic views of Mount Otemanu. No bustling terminals or crowded halls, this small, open-air terminal offers just serene tropical vibes. It is the perfect, welcoming gateway to paradise.

Resorts typically would arrange boat transfers from the airport to your stay, with welcome desks set up at the terminal. Guests are greeted with the lei, and then escorted to the boat for their accommodations. It offers a seamless and scenic start to their stay in Bora Bora. These transfers can be included in your accomodation package and free, or may be added to your bill. Verify with your travel agency or resorts in advance for the cost.

Air Tahiti offers a free shuttle boat between the airport and Vaitape, the main town on the island. The ferry runs on a schedule that matches arriving and departing flights.

In addition, you can also arrange private transfers, or use water taxis. Private transfers could cost $110+, depending on the time, the service providers, and the group size.

Getting Around

There are several ways to get around Bora Bora.

Boats

  • Resort shuttle boats: Many resorts offer regular shuttle boat services to the main island. Check with resorts for schedule and cost.
  • Water taxi: Water taxis are typically private services, offering direct and flexible transportation. The cost of a water taxi ride starts at around $20, depending on services providers, distance, the time of day, and route.

Bike, E-Bike or Scooters

  • Ideal for exploring the main island. Many resorts and shops in Vaitape, as well as Avis Bora Bora, rent them. The rental rate for a bike is about $20+ per day, E-Bike $40+ per day, and scooter $60+ per day. It is possible to get a lower rate for renting for a shorter period such as 4 hours or 8 hours.

Rental Cars

  • Limited availability but useful for visiting the entire island, which has a single 20-mile (32 km) loop road. The rental rate at Avis Bora Bora starts around $120 per day.

Taxis

  • Convenient for short distances but can be expensive ($15-$20). Negotiate the fare upfront.

Public Transit:

  • “Le Truck” is a basic bus system but runs infrequently and mainly caters to locals.

Walking

  • Matira Beach and nearby areas are walkable and perfect for leisurely exploration.

Kathy’s Experience: Conrad Bora Bora Nui ($$$$$)

It offers a variety of accommodations: overwater villas with/without pools, beach/lagoon/Mount Otemanu view villas and suites, as well as two two-story, three-bedroom Presidential Overwater Villas, one of the largest in Bora Bora.

The sunset sushi dinner for two was a huge disappointment for us.)
  • Kathy’s experience: We had an amazing time during our 4-night stay at a Deluxe overwater villa in Conrad. The reason we chose Conrad over other resorts because we read the snorkeling experience in Conrad is better as there are more marine lifes to observe (Note: the lagoon around Conrad overwater villas is a bit deeper (up to 10 feet) than other resorts.) The ground of the resort is gorgeous and quite big to walk around. The resort offers bicycles to the guests for free use. The villa is beautiful, spacious, luxurious, and serene, perfect for relaxation and intimate moments. The breakfast is awesome with a good selection, and warm, fresh-baked pastries are just delicious. Although we were not overly impressed with the dinner options in the resort, the highlight of our stay is Friday night’s Tamara’a in Tamure Beach Grill, a traditional Polynesian feast with a dance show. Guests can observe how food is prepared and cooked in an underground oven lined with hot volcanic stones and covered with banana leaves, experience the open-oven ceremony, enjoy a good variety of delicious traditional Polynesian food with their toes in the sand, and watch a captivating Polynesian performance.
